Street Renamed For Only Female Police Officer Killed In WTC
A Brooklyn street was dedicated Saturday to Moira Smith, the only female police officer killed in the World Trade Center attack.
An unofficial ceremony was held to rename 74th Street between 5th and 6th avenues, in the Bay Ridge neighborhood where she was born and raised, P.O. Moira Smith Way. Police Commissioner Ray Kelly and other officers joined Smith’s daughter and husband, who is also a member of the NYPD.
"We don't know how many lives she saved on September 11th,” Kelly said. “We do know that she stood among the falling debris with her flash light, in the smoke, guiding terrified victims to safety. How do we know that? We know that because the people who she saved are alive today to tell the story."
A New York Waterway ferry has also been named in honor of Smith
